BMW Partners With Figure to Deploy Humanoid Robots in South Carolina Plant

BMW Manufacturing has partnered with robotics startup Figure to introduce humanoid robots into its Spartanburg, South Carolina facility. This groundbreaking collaboration marks Figure’s first commercial deal since its 2022 inception and signals a bold step towards a more efficient and automated future for the iconic carmaker.

Figure’s sleek and dexterous humanoid robots, dubbed “Figure 01,” are designed to tackle the toughest tasks on the production line. From wielding heavy tools in the body shop to navigating tight spaces for precise sheet metal handling, these versatile machines will take on the burden of repetitive, physically demanding, or potentially hazardous jobs. This frees up human workers to focus on their unique skillsets, including problem-solving, quality control, and continuous improvement initiatives.

“This partnership represents a significant leap forward in automotive production,” enthused Dr. Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “By integrating Figure’s cutting-edge AI and robotics technology, we’re not only enhancing efficiency and safety but also empowering our workforce to focus on higher-level tasks that require the ingenuity and creativity of human minds.”

The Figure 01 is designed for adaptability. Its modular limbs and advanced dexterity allow it to be programmed for a wide range of tasks, making it a valuable asset across diverse manufacturing stages. This flexibility ensures the robots can evolve alongside production needs, paving the way for a truly future-proofed factory.

While the initial deployment will involve a limited number of robots, the partnership envisions a gradual expansion based on performance and production goals. This cautious approach allows for thorough integration and optimization, ensuring the robots seamlessly complement the existing workforce.

“We’re thrilled to partner with BMW on this transformative project,” said Dr. Roddy Burghardt, CEO of Figure. “Our mission is to create robots that empower humans, and this collaboration perfectly exemplifies that vision. Together, we’re shaping the future of automotive manufacturing, where humans and machines work in harmony to deliver exceptional quality and efficiency.”

Experts believe this partnership could be a game-changer for the industry. “The introduction of humanoid robots marks a significant step towards a more flexible and adaptable production landscape,” remarked Dr. Anna Lee, an automation specialist at the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics. “This collaboration has the potential to revolutionize the way cars are built, with increased efficiency, improved safety, and a workforce empowered to reach its full potential.”

As BMW and Figure embark on this groundbreaking journey, the eyes of the entire automotive world are upon them. The success of this partnership could set a precedent for the future of manufacturing, paving the way for a new era where humans and robots collaborate seamlessly to drive innovation and excellence.
